Recently I purchased a small booklet of Manache Shlok at Sajjangad and later after 3-4 days started posting a shloka a day and slowly it’s becoming a habit. 6 weeks of consistency at least. It’s serving many purposes for me. Obviously top most is spiritual. But in the process I am learning how to inculcate a new habit, posting a shlok daily is instilling some consistency. Also, it gives a good set of new vocabulary and in the process explores their etymology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Shloka 1. \u0917\u092e\u0942 : to follow or trudge (a path) easy to guess based on Sanskrit Gaman
Shloka 2 : knew all words
3: \u0935\u0948\u0916\u0930\u0940 : one of the four types of speech. Normal Human speech.
\u092e\u093e\u0928\u0935\u0940 : human being (noun). It’s less common in the modern usage, but is a favourite of our prime minister \u092e\u093e\u0928\u0935 is common in the cotemporary usage<\/p>\n\n\n\n
5: \u091a\u0940 \u091a\u0940 the older version of \u091b\u0940 \u091b\u0940 <\/p>\n\n\n\n
6: \u0928\u0941\u0930\u0947 again an olden style , the modern syntax is \u0928 \u0909\u0930\u0947. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u096d: \u0928\u0940\u0935\u0935\u093e\u0935\u0947 to pacify <\/p>\n\n\n\n
13: \u0915\u0941\u0921\u0940 means body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
18: \u0936\u094d\u0932\u093e\u0918\u094d\u092f\u0935\u093e\u0923\u0947 appreciable it’s not common in current Marathi usage but its opposite \u0905\u0936\u094d\u0932\u093e\u0918\u094d\u092f ( an adjective usually reserved for usage of fowl language and cuss words).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
19: \u0939\u093f\u0902\u092a\u0941\u091f\u0940 an interesting word, initially I thought it might be some native Marathi ( Deshaj) word but I found out that it is derived from Sanskrit roots. \u0939\u0943\u0926\u092f in Sanskrit is analogous to \u0939\u093f\u092f\u094d\u092f in Prakrit. Though people will find if someone uses this word today amusing, it has left its footprint in Marathi by being a part of a common phrase \u092e\u0928\u093e\u091a\u093e \u0939\u093f\u092f\u094d\u092f\u093e \u0915\u0930\u0942\u0928 ( meaning gathering all courage). \u0939\u093f\u092f\u094d\u092f\u093e \u092b\u0941\u091f\u0940 became \u0939\u093f\u0902\u092a\u0941\u091f\u0940 meaning a hertbreak. Now heartbreak has a modern Sankrit-based neologism in Marathi called \u0939\u0943\u0926\u092f\u092d\u0902\u0917 and \u0939\u093f\u0902\u092a\u0941\u091f\u0940 nobody uses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
21: \u0926\u094d\u0930\u0935\u094d\u092f\u0926\u093e\u0930\u093e wife and wealth. It might be common in medieval times but not suitable as a compound word for modern times hence no longer in use and rightly so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
23: \u0935\u093e\u0909\u0917\u0947\u0902 an older form of modern \u0935\u093e\u0935\u0917\u0947 which means objectionable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
24: \u0935\u094b\u0938\u0923\u093e\u0935\u0947\u0902 again I thought this would be pure Marathi without a Sanskrit connection but is derived from \u090a\u0924\u094d\u0938\u094d\u0935\u092a\u094d\u0928 which means to talk irrelevant, as irrelevant as one talks in sleep when having a dream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
By the way this again reminds me that often \u0913 is interchangeable with \u0935\u094b in old Marathi and still persists in some styles of spoken Marathi. Modern linguists will consider this ‘\u0905\u0936\u0941\u0926\u094d\u0927’ ( a word meaning impure used for inaccurate grammar usage. But the usage of the word itself, once rampant, is going down and the politically correct alternative is \u091a\u0941\u0915\u0940\u091a\u093e !) <\/p>\n\n\n\n
I have a strong hunch that each of \u0907\/\u090f, \u090b , \u0932\u0943, \u0909\/\u0913 have a correspondence with \u092f, \u0930, \u0932, \u0935 in their pronunciation and the previous is a softer vowel form and later consonant form of the same entities. In spoken language, I’ve noted some interchangeability among these also. I think \u090b sounds something in the middle of \u0905 & \u0930 continuum. I don’t have any evidence for this conjecture but if a Marathi Language expert is reading this please give me feedback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
27: \u0932\u0902\u0921\u0940 is a pretentious fellow. It’s not related to the membrum virile as modern obscene usage of this word refers to. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
29: \u092a\u0926\u0940 \u0930\u093e\u0918\u0935\u093e\u091a\u0947 \u0938\u0926\u093e \u092c\u094d\u0930\u0940\u0926 \u0917\u093e\u091c\u0947\u0964 \u0935\u0933\u0947\u0902. \u092c\u094d\u0930\u0940\u0926\u0935\u093e\u0915\u094d\u092f means motto in modern Marathi. Let’s how these two get connected. \u092c\u094d\u0930\u0940\u0926 I used to think is a Sanskrit word ( a Tastsama: means the same as that) but it is not so. It is a Tadbhava( means derived from that). It is derived from Sanskrit verb \u0935\u093f+\u0930\u0941\u0926 ( \u0930\u0941\u0926 means to cry and \u0935\u093f \u0927\u093e\u0924\u0941\u092a\u094d\u0930\u0924\u094d\u092f\u092f qualifies it in a specific context).
Now let’s see that context. Ordinarily, \u0935\u093f\u0930\u0941\u0926 can mean crying out loud. But in the olden days, a guard in front of the King would shout out loud a list of epithets before the King entered his court so the audience in the court would get some time and get ready for the reception of the King. This list became \u0935\u093f\u0930\u0941\u0926\u093e\u0935\u0932\u0940 and the word got imported as \u092c\u093f\u0930\u0941\u0926\u093e\u0935\u0932\u0940 in Marathi. Now each member of that list of epithets became a \u092c\u093f\u0930\u0941\u0926. Thus \u092c\u093f\u0930\u0941\u0926 means epithet in Marathi. ( I am not running a fantasy. Please see Tulpule’s dictionary of old English and Apte’s Sanskrit to cross-check.) Now this \u092c\u093f\u0930\u0941\u0926 got changed to \u092c\u094d\u0930\u0940\u0926.When a worrier\/fighter made a huge effort as a token of appreciation an ornament to be worn on legs was offered. It is called \u092c\u093f\u0930\u0941\u0926\u093e\u091a\u093e \u0924\u094b\u0921\u0930 or \u092c\u093f\u0930\u0941\u0926\u093e\u091a\u093e \u0924\u094b\u0921\u093e or \u092c\u094d\u0930\u0940\u0926 \u0924\u094b\u0921\u0930 \/ \u092c\u094d\u0930\u0940\u0926 \u0935\u0933\u0947. Rama is the bravest of heroes hence it is quite natural that he must have won this ornament for his heroic deeds. \u092a\u0926\u0940 \u0930\u093e\u0918\u0935\u093e\u091a\u0947 \u0938\u0926\u093e \u092c\u094d\u0930\u0940\u0926 \u0917\u093e\u091c\u0947\u0964 \u0935\u0933\u0947\u0902 means always the epithet-ornament makes noise (\u0917\u093e\u091c\u0947 derived from Sanskrit \u0917\u0930\u094d\u091c ) at the feet of Raghava. It is followed by \u092d\u0915\u094d\u0924\u0930\u0940\u092a\u0942\u0936\u093f\u0930\u0940 \u0915\u093e\u0902\u092c\u093f \u0935\u093e\u091c\u0947 means an iron rod loudly hits the head of the opponents of Rama’s Bhakts. Hence Ram is powerful and he always protects his bhakts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
38-42 all these shlokas end with \u092e\u0928\u093e \u0938\u091c\u094d\u091c\u0928\u093e \u0930\u093e\u0918\u0935\u0940\u0902 \u0935\u0938\u094d\u0924\u093f \u0915\u0940\u091c\u0947 . \u0915\u0940\u091c\u0947 here exactly means what \u0915\u093f\u091c\u0940\u092f\u0947 means in modern Hindi. This verb is no longer in use in modern Marathi.
