Today I met Dr B.D. Pujari on the occasion of his birthday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He is a fine example wherein he rose from humble beginnings and set big achievements. There’s is a saying in Latin for this kind of achievement: ‘per aspera ad astra’ which means through hardship to the stars. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Humble beginning<\/strong>
Dr Bindumadhao Dattatray Pujari started his surgical career in the early 1960s. Born on 24th April 1935 in a family of priests of Shri Narsobawadi temple. He had hardships to face in his childhood e.g. he had to walk a few miles to his high school, had to cross the Krishna river to reach there either by a boat or if missed it then by swimming across. Despite such hardships, he was determined to achieve big. He topped the matriculation exam, stood first in the entire Kolhapur district and secured admission to the famous Rajaram College Kolhapur. He topped the pre-degree year qualification exam for medical college also and got admission to the Byramji Jijibhoy Medical College, Poona ( now BJ Govt Medical College Pune).
He excelled in academics there too, but due to some personal grouse with the examiner had to repeat the practical exam of Master of Surgery for multiple attempts. Despite the humiliation, he did not lose determination. He continued to work as a tutor in anatomy at the newly formed Miraj Medical College till he cleared his examination. After he cleared the Master of Surgery examination, he started his private practice.

He has contributed a lot in private practice in terms of the volume of surgeries he did, and the number of patients he treated. The number of surgeries he performed is big. Miraj has been a centre of surgical excellence from the late nineteenth century to date. Its surgical field has contributions from many generations of hardworking surgeons and now also it continues to excel even in the era of superspeciality. You name a surgical speciality or superspeciality it’s already available here. Only with the volume of his work Dr B. D. Pujari deserves a distinguished place in the list of stellar contributors when we consider the history of Surgery in our region\/country, but what distinguishes him is his contribution to the following two fields.

Contribution to Surgical Literature<\/strong>
He is a prolific academic author and has written dozens of articles more than 20 of which are in PubMed indexed journals. He is the only author from our town to have written multiple articles in the British Journal of Surgery, British Journal of Urology and British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. All three journals are very high impact journals and remain so to date. Many of his articles are case reports. Nowadays the journals are loath to accept and publish case reports and they lay stress on more ‘high-level evidence’ articles like Randomized trials and meta-analyses. He wrote an article in the Indian Journal of Surgery (he was editor of this Journal) on case reports and there was a reply to this article by a learned member of the association. He gave an author’s reply to that letter. Both the letter and reply are worth studying if one wants to know more about the problems of case reports. Of many papers that he published two papers must be mentioned. On a personal note, I had referred to these two while I was doing my Surgical Gastroenterology residency along with his article on Sigmoid volvulus in the Annals of Surgical Gastroenterology. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
